There would be a celebration;
A child would soon be born.
All of the angels would be there,
Even Gabriel with his horn.
But the child asked the Creator,
“Why must I be sent to Earth?
I am so completely helpless,
Why must I experience birth?â€
God said, “There will be an angel
To be with you all the way.
An angel to protect and love you
From your very first Earth day.â€
The child said, “I will miss it here,
This place so full of light and song.â€
God said, “Your angel’s song will soothe you,
So your nights will not seem long.â€
He said, “Your angel then will teach you
All of the things you need to know
To make your life a fruitful one
While you spend it down below.â€
“But God, I know I’ll surely miss You,
I know how much I’ll have to say.â€
“When you need to talk to me
Your angel will teach you how to pray.â€
“My angel sounds so very special,
That you created just for me.
But just how can an angel love
Someone as helpless as I’ll be?â€
“Your angel’s life will be for you
And you will fill your angel’s heart
On the very day you’re born,
‘Cause then your angel’s life will start.â€
“But just what is my angel’s name?
How will I know it from another?â€
“Your angel has an earthly name
But you will learn to call her Mother.â€
There is no Biblical backing for a pre-existence. God did say that he knew us in our mother’s womb. Some religions believe that we all had a life before being conceived on Earth and that our earthly status is earned during this pre-existence. I haven’t changed religions but I did think the concept was interesting enough to write a poem about. A Very Special Angel was written as a Mother’s Day poem and not as a statement of belief. In my humorous poems, I quite often write stories about Heaven and Hell that certainly don’t reflect my beliefs. If you belong to a religion that teaches pre-existence, I hope that this poem will have special meaning for you.
